  • Excavated in Luoyang, Henan, this tricolor horse is the epitome of the Tang people’s love and care of horses. With precisely such love, the unknown potter carefully observes the structure of horses and captures their physical proportion in this representation. The mane appears only on one side and is clearly carved. This suggests the funerary use of the artifact. The tail is knotted to give the horse free movement. The glazed saddle shows the material quality of wool fabrics. The elaboration of the medals and decorations reflects the wealth and power of the Tang Dynasty.
