Words from the Director
National Museum of History (NMH) was founded in 1955; it has been administratively subordinate to Ministry of Culture since 20 May 2012. NMH is the first public museum in Taiwan and has been a pioneer in Taiwan’s museum sector. For the last sixty seven years, the Museum has organized more than 2000 classic and acclaimed exhibitions and played important roles in the collection of national artifacts and in their exhibitions, researches, and interpretations. The Museum, with its generally recognized cultural energy, has exercised profound influences on Taiwan's social education, art, and culture.
National Museum of History has been closed for renovation since 2018. After these years, the Museum is now preparing for a grand reopening. During this preparation period, the Museum and its staff have been actively striving to fulfil the five executive goals: (1) proactive enhancement of hardware and software, (2) expanding the study of art history with stocktaking and integration of resources, (3) establishing strategic alliances to increase public engagement, (4) strengthening museum without walls with diversity and border-crossing endeavors, and (5) utilizing art economics to enrich public heritage. With NMH as the center, we plan to expand to all levels of cultural institutions and integrate their collections to realize the greatest potential of the Museum.
Staff of the NMH has been working in unison to complete the NMH Upgrade and Expansion Project and to fulfil the mission of renovating the Museum's buildings. At present, the first phase of NMH restoration and re-utilization project is near completion, while the second phase of interior renovation and landscape construction project is about to begin. Besides the hardware projects, the Museum also strives for enhancing the diversity of software services. We plan exhibitions and educational activities to creative utilize and market museum collection; we promote cross-sector cooperation and alliances, and we introduce comprehensive volunteer training programs. These efforts and resources, along with our senses of honor and responsibility, aim to render a new vision of "NMH at 68, with splendor and sustainability."
National Museum of History is the most important institution in the development of modern and contemporary art in Taiwan. We want to express our appreciation for previous directors; their active efforts in museum administration have paved a solid base for building Taiwan's culture, history, and artistic identity. The Museum is undergoing a quality transformation and aims to provide excellent and agreeable service to public. Following the five core values of connection, engagement, innovation, inclusion, and sustainability, the Museum will devote itself to consolidate the diversity and modernity of Taiwan's culture, to promote the public access of artistic collection, to boost art economics, and to bring a better and more beautiful cultural environment for the public; in this way, Taiwan's art energy can be seen by the entire world.
